Karnataka is a renewable rich State with a total installed capacity base of 15 GW and is one of the pioneers in renewable energy addition in the country and a key stakeholder in achieving the country’s renewable energy (RE) goals. To evacuate the green power produced in the region, a robust power transmission infrastructure is of utmost importance. Udupi-Kasargode Transmission Ltd (UKTL) is one such power transmission project that’s committed towards meeting India’s RE goals by evacuating the green power produced in the region to further strengthen the power supply and stability in southern India.
UKTL is an ISTS project envisaged by the Ministry of Power, is envisioned with the objective of improving reliability of power supply and stability in the northern area of Kerala. It also aims at relieving congestion between the S1 (Andhra Pradesh, Telangana & Karnataka) and S2 (Tamil Nadu & Kerala) corridors in south India. Once operational, UKTL project will have the potential to carry more than 1000 MW of additional power through an ISTS feed to the region. The project will also strengthen the existing transmission system to address the growing power demands and make it future ready in terms of energy requirement.
The strengthening of power infrastructure is incomplete without the augmentation of the transmission network which enables constraint-free transportation of bulk power from generating stations. In southern India,there is an urgent need to strengthen the existing power transmission infrastructure and at the same time expedite the ongoing inter-state transmission system (ISTS) project to ensure reliable and affordable 24×7 power supply.
